Soil, soma and soul

(*soma – the body as distinct from the soul, mind, or psyche.)

—-

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap

Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge

Through living roots awaken in my head.

But I’ve no spade to follow men like them.

Between my finger and my thumb

The squat pen rests.

I’ll dig with it.    –  Seamus Heaney

This is an indoor/outdoor workshop with Grace Wells. It will run over a weekend with Friday evening arrival and Monday morning departure. The content will evolve with the weather conditions, what is growing in the polytunnels and around the farm, and the interests of the group.

We are at our best when following our passion. In this workshop Grace will be combining three of her lifelong passions – writing as a poet/facilitator, working physically with the land as a gardener/smallholder and her own style of ‘Heartfulness Yoga’.

Come to Common Ground and expect to be inspired by an organic mix of activities which will ask you to dig deep, to stretch your body and turn over some uncultivated corners of your mind. Be prepared to find yourself anew as a creature of the earth, to get dirt under your fingernails, to release your animal self into digging, sniffing, tasting and making your mark.

You might harvest haiku in the poly tunnel find a stanza or two on the hazel wood, uncover metaphor in the mulch. The few days together will be an adventure in growing your tendrils between psychological splits of our consumer society. Reconnection between mind and body
– body and ground – soul and its place in nature.

Bring your pen – spades and other tools will be provided.

Come prepared to spend time outdoors and be comfortable – so bring warm clothes/wet gear, wellies, a flask and something to help you sit on or close to the ground.

Hi Marilyn – I’ll add a few more notes – let me know if you have any further questions. Since Grace travels from Tipperary the workshop will run over two whole days probably a Sat and Sunday – arrivals Friday pm and departure Monday am. RB
